I love music and have loads of collection on my iPod that 80 gb is falling short of. Be it a sufi, a classical, an instrumental, I have myriad genres of music stored on my iPod. Without music, I wonder how life would exist on earth. I am sure everyone of us, listen to radio, at least while commuting in the bus or train. Some are also inspired to sing or learn a musical instrument though we are not trained. Well, speaking of singers or musicians who are self-trained, Kishore da is my favourite.
I am happy to watch this video featuring Usman Riaz, a self taught musician, and his thirst to learn a variety of musical instruments, all by himself listening to the hundreds and hundreds of audios on internet. When I listened to his compositions, I was totally mesmerized and started to search for some more compositions by him. He comes from a family of artists and musicians. Usman started playing classical piano at the age of six and taught himself to play a variety of instruments from the internet. When people say, they download and learn to play the guitar seeing the youtube videos, it still takes me to surprise, how!
Unlike, other areas of learning, music needs a lot of dedication and concentration. I, myself, having learned basics of Carnatic music, find it very hard to follow the musical notes on the internet and request my teacher to correct me when I play out of tune. I confess, two of the western musical instruments I own, both Piccolo, a western classical flute and keyboard, I have failed to play with without flaws and a Tanvajur Veena. But this video talk by Usman is truly an inspiring one. He explains how he had to pause, to get the exact finger position. At sixteen, he played a guitar. He used the knowledge acquired to make his own music, orchestras, paintings and relate them. This does not limit him to compositions, but goes a step ahead body percussion and making films.
He shares his experience of traveling across the globe, one among the 32 musicians in the US and his happiest moment of sharing the stage with his internet Guru from whom he learn to pluck the guitar strings. Usman has set an example on how people can make use of the internet in a good way, by learning most toughest things at ease. This video is a source of inspiration to those who complain, that they couldn't find a teacher!
Check Usman's webpage: http://www.usmanriaz.me and get lost in music.Who knows, you would start playing some tunes on your abandoned guitar seeing this video. For now, I am dusting my long forgotten instruments and searching for online lessons.

I like listening to songs of all genres, be it Kannada, Tamil, Telugu or Hindi, that are melodious.Maestro Illayaraja is one of the famous South Indian music composer from the Tamil film industry. He has also contributed to the Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi film industries. One would be mesmerized listening to his compositions.
A Tamil movie, Mouna Ragam , starring Mohan and Revathi was directed in 1986. One of the hit songs of the movie is "Mandram Vantha" which I have listened umpteen times and never get bored.
In 2007, Hindi movie, Cheeni Kum starring Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu was released and the title track, "Cheeni Kum", a song became a hit.
When I listen to all the three songs, the tunes are the same in 3 different languages, yet adorable. You can't listen to one and leave the other. What is your take on this?
In 1981, Kannada movie, Geetha, was directed by Shankar Nag who was the main lead and Akshata Rao. The romantic song from this movie which is a hit even today is "Jothe Jotheyali" composed by the Maestro.

Noted Veena player Jayanthi Kumaresh playing Raag Mand of Hindustaani music. One of my favourite composition. :)
I have been listening to this sing Taye Yoshada as a Comtemporary music. Beautifully sung by Carnatic Vocalist Sudha Raghunathan as a playback singer from the movie Morning Raga.

Just a couple of months I enjoy listening to music collection my iPod everyday traveling in the bus to office-home, I lost the ear cushions of my Sennheiser headphones. After an endless search to find a spare ear cushion, I learned that Sennheiser service was not available in Bangalore, none of the showrooms including Imagine or the shops at SP Road had. :(
I shot an email to the concerned person on their website and soon I was communicated that the spare ear cushions for the head phone model I own was available and that they would send it through courier on the receipt of an AT PAR cheque.

I was happy to see the quick service by Sennheiser. Now, I enjoy listening to the music again!

One of my favourite Gazal: Hazaron Khwahishen Aisi - Jagjit Singh.
Artist: Jagjit Singh
Album: Mirza Ghalib
hazaaron Khvaahishen aisii ki har Khvaaish pe dam nikale
bahut nikale mere armaaN lekin phir bhii kam nikale
nikalanaa Khuld se aadam kaa sunate aaye hain lekin
bahut beaabaruu hokar tere kuuche se ham nikale
muhabbat men nahiin hai farq jiine aur marane kaa
usii ko dekh kar jiite hain jis kaafir pe dam nikale
Khudaa ke vaaste pardaa na kaabe se uThaa zaalim
Kahiin aisaa na ho yaaN bhii vahii kaafir sanam nikale
KahaaN maiKhaane ka daravaazaa 'Ghalib' aur kahaaN vaaiz
par itanaa jaanate hain kal vo jaataa thaa ke ham nikale
Click below to listen to the song:
Translation:
Thousands of desires, each worth dying for...
Many of them I have realized...yet I yearn for more...
We have heard about the dismissal of Adam from Heaven
With more humiliation, I am leaving the street on which you live...
When in love, there is little difference between life and death
we live by looking at the infidel for whom we are willing to die
For god's sake, don't lift the cover off any secrets you tyrant
the infidel might turn out to be my lover!
The preacher and the bar's entrance are way apart
yet I saw him entering the bar as I was leaving!

Rock On: The latest movie on the box office produced by Farhan Akhtar, who also plays the lead along with Arjun Rampal, Luke Kenny and Purab Kohli. This is the first time I am watching the person behind the screen-Farhan Akhtar: director of the hits like Dil Chahta Hai and Lakshya, on screen.
The movie kicks of with Farhan's wife, Prachi Desai, unhappy that her husband isn't paying enough attention to her. She discovers the fact that her workaholic husband was a music freak a decade ago, during his college days had were a band of four- Farhan(Aditya Shroff) singer and lyricist, Arjun(Joe) as guitarist, Purab(Kedar Zaveri aka KD, Killer Drummer) as drummer and Luke(Rob Nancy) on keyboard. The band was called--Magik since the tunes played by Rob and lyrics by Aditya had a magical effect. The band had broken up long time. Her efforts not only re-unites the four buddies but also heals their relationship.
The story is not only about rock music, it is also about the bonding, the trust and faith among them. How the four of them re-unite for a concert and win, after a long span of ten years. Though, the music (by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy) is completely rock with Hindi lyrics, the movie is definitely a worth watch. Two songs which I liked: title track-Rock On and the remix of Saason ki zaroorat hai jaise, sung during Dandiya. Needless to say, Farhan's curly hair with hair band and Arjun's long hair drove me crazy :D
This movie also reminds me of the famous Jhankaar Beats which was released in the year 2004. If you've seen Jhankaar Beats, you will notice the similarities and differences between the two movies.
If you liked Jhankaar Beats, I am sure, you will like Rock On, too :)

I was in class 6 when I watched this Malayalam movie: Manichitrathazhu. Though, I did not know Malayalam language, I was able to follow this movie and watched it on some channel at home. The movie was released in the year 1993. The lead role was played by actress Shobana who is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer. This movie is one my favourites. Remember, language should never be a barrier. The story line of the movie being Shobana suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder and concludes with her chopping the head of dummy toy whom she thinks is a king and recovers from the disorder. Shobana also won Best Actress Award for this movie.
Following the success of this movie, remakes were done in several languages including Kannada (Aaptamitra), Tamil(Chandramukhi), Telugu(Chandramukhi) and Hindi(Bhool Bhulaiyaa). Though, the movie was a flop in Hindi due to the flaws in direction, it was a major hit in Kannada and Tamil.
In Kannada, the lead role was played by Late Soundarya in Aaptamitra (year 2004) which was her last movie and was released after her death. Though, Soundarya wasn't a trained Bharatanatyam dancer, her performance was fabulous. The reason I liked these two songs is because of the fast beats. Though, Chandramukhi has the same song in the ending, it was too slow and did not amuse me much.

I watch them many times in my iPod :)

Last weekend, I stayed at home since it was pouring cats and dogs in the city and moreover, I was down with ear and throat infection :( My dad was occupied watching the IPL cricket match and he would not part from the television or cricket so easily! I sat down watching live cricket accompanying dad. In less than an hour, I was bored. I could not follow the sport and I was easily lost understanding the sport. Whenever I asked dad something while he was curiously watching, he would get annoyed. So I decided to walk out and I was back in my room and medddling with the computer keyboard.
Lemme listen to some songs... Browsing through the songs drive... Uuh, ho.. all these are pretty old... Lemme listen to the radio... Blah, blab, blah... Radio--also boring.. Playing same old songs... Lemme search for something new on the net... Oh, yeah, Jaane Tu..Yaa Janne Na is the latest movie, lemme check for these songs... Downloading all songs.. only one song left--Pappu can't dance! "eRRoR" downloading "Pappu can't dance".. goli maaro... Chalo, listen to the other songs...
The songs of Jaane Tu.. Ya Jaane Na are good and why not it be, if AR Rehman has played them. I liked esp Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Zindagi and the title song, Jaane Tu mera Kya Tha(Aditi)-female version the most, followed by Nazarein Milana.
Do you remember, cute and smiling Genelia of Bommarillu and Boyz? These are the two movies I have seen Genelia and liked both the movies :) Listening to the songs, I guess, the movie might be of that sort-college going teenagers in love. Lets wait and watch what this movie is upto :)
I will not write a detailed description of the movie since many would have already seen it or know the history better. Jodha Akbar: reminds me of the richness, royalty and gorgeous ex Miss World, as in the movies Devdas and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. This is the first time, I've seen Hrithik as an Emporer in a royal attire. Enjoyed the music. I hear this song: Jashn-E-Bahara as someone phone rings :)
Watching this movie at Urvashi after a long time reminded me of my good old school and college days when no credit cards or online bookings were needed. How could I forget ice cream at MTR?
..and how did you like it?

Today, June 21st is World Music Day. Music plays an important role in everyone's life. Well, who on earth would hate music? Most of us sing as a hobby; mostly commonly called Bathroom singers and some are professionals who have learnt for instruments/singing for years together with dedication and determination. I bow down to all those great singers.
When we wake up early morning listen to Suprabhatam. Homemakers listen to Radio City or the other Radio Stations during the peak hours. While travelling in the bus, most of us listen to songs: earplug in the ears is common or rather say cell phone serves more like a radio than a the purpose it was invented for :) In fact, we find most people with an mp3 player and some rich people with iPods ;-)
The best music one has ever heard would be: Rhapsody of water, chirpping of birds :)
Some of my favourite songs to which I can listen without getting bugged:

Ae zindagi gale laga le(Sadma)
